Cheng Men (City Gate) is a limited edition oud-floral-musk perfume by John Biebel of January Scent Project (2023). The fragrance is an eau de parfum that features three oud oils, including a Thai oud oil that has been aged for 30 years. It also includes red champaca oil as a featured flower in a bouquet of lily of the valley and mimosa. Sweet olive elicits a rich, green oiliness that advances the scent into sharp, resonant and smoky oud. The base of Cheng Men is a complex blending of coumarin-rich resins and earthy roots and leaves. As the perfume develops on the skin, notes of deer musk accord and costus root suggest an apothecary of smells locked for safekeeping in the glass jars and wooden drawers of a Chinese city’s pharmacy. 

Cheng Men is a perfume of contrasting textures, fruits, flowers, woods, dried roots and rhizomes. It is a depiction of the potentiality stored within vital botanicals - a metaphor of a thriving city that hums and buzzes behind the protective gate of an ancient surrounding wall.
